Renting storage space: which type suits you?

“Storage” is not a single product but an umbrella term. A unit along a public corridor, a container delivered to your driveway and a sealed container in a guarded hall differ enormously in price, security and convenience. On this page we lay the options side by side, so you can choose based on how long you are storing and how often you need access.

Types of storage

Six types of storage, and when to choose which

The differences come down to three things: who loads your belongings, how often you can get to them and how they are secured. For each type we also state what it is not suited for, because the wrong choice mainly costs you money.

Container storage

You rent your own container and load it at our loading bay. You drive right up to your container, so no corridors and no lifts. We seal it in your presence and an automated storage system moves it into place in the hall. Nothing is transshipped, nobody walks past your container and no one enters it in the meantime.

Mobile storage

The container comes to your address and stays for as long as you need to load it. We then collect it, sealed. No van rental and no driving back and forth. Later we return it wherever you want it: at the same address or at your new one.

Less suitable ifThere is no room for a container on your driveway or in your street.

Files and archives in a climate-controlled space, moved in and out of the racks in order. Our information security is ISO 27001 certified, something healthcare institutions, schools and public authorities ask about as standard in tenders.

A grand piano, art, a collection or antique furniture calls for climate control and for professionals to handle the transport. We discuss the packaging in advance and increase the insured value in consultation.

The honest comparison, including where we lose

We do container storage, so we are not neutral. Still: on one point self-storage is simply better, and if that is your situation, you should choose it. Below you can see the difference per feature.

How much space do I need?

Estimate your volume in cubic metres

Storage is calculated in cubic metres, not square metres: you stack right up to the top. The table below is a guideline based on home type. If you are torn between two sizes, take the larger one, because a second run costs extra.

What drives the volume upTall cabinets, a sofa with chaise longue, garden furniture, bicycles, an attic full of boxes and anything you cannot dismantle. Taking off cabinet doors and bed bases easily saves a quarter.

What keeps the volume downUniform moving boxes instead of loose bags, dismantling furniture, and filling the gaps in cabinets and drawers with soft textiles. We stack to the ceiling, so stable stacking means more fits in.

Rather not estimate it yourself?During a survey our account manager determines the volume for you, on site or via photo and video. The size is then fixed and you are not paying for air.

What to watch out for

Six things that can ruin your storage quote

Storage providers advertise a monthly price. The difference between providers usually lies in what that price does not include. Run through these six before you sign, with us or with anyone else.

What is not included in the monthly price?

With many providers there are extra charges for delivery and collection, for access in between or for a mandatory lock and insurance. Always calculate the full period, not just the first month.

Ask: can I see a sample calculation for my entire storage period?

How often can you really get to it?

This is the point people misjudge most often. Be honest with yourself beforehand: do you need weekly access, or can your belongings simply stay away for a few months? That determines the type.

Ask: what does interim access cost and how quickly can it be arranged?

Is the space heated and dry?

Unheated units and shipping containers in a yard can suffer from condensation and frost. Wood can warp, and electronics and paper suffer from damp.

Ask: is my storage indoors, in a conditioned hall?

Who else can get in?

A unit along a public corridor is more accessible than a sealed container in a closed hall. Ask about the access policy and whether it is recorded who comes in.

Ask: how can I tell whether someone has been near my belongings?

How is the insurance arranged?

Storage is usually not insured automatically. Sometimes it runs through your own home contents insurance, sometimes you take out separate storage insurance. Know in advance which of the two it is.

Ask: up to what amount am I covered and what is excluded?

What is the notice period?

A low monthly price with a one-year contract is more expensive than a slightly higher price you can stop after two months. Moves rarely go exactly as planned.

Almost everything is allowed, a handful of things are not

The rules are about fire safety and about damage to other people's belongings in the same hall. Unsure about something? Mention it in your request and we will see whether it is possible.

Preparation pays off. Empty and dry any appliances that hold water (fridge, washing machine, coffee machine), remove batteries from devices and make sure nothing goes into the container wet. Moisture you bring in yourself is the main cause of damage during storage.

What is the difference between container storage and self-storage?+

With self-storage you rent a locked unit along a public corridor, which you enter yourself with a key or code. With container storage you rent your own container, which is sealed in your presence and placed in a locked hall by an automated storage system. Self-storage is more convenient if you need frequent access; container storage is a better fit if your belongings will sit untouched for a while, and it saves you carrying everything twice.

What types of storage are there?+

The main types are container storage in a guarded hall, mobile storage where the container comes to your address, moving with storage to bridge the gap between two homes, business storage for stock and materials, and archive storage for files. They differ mainly in who does the loading, how often you can get to your belongings and how they are secured.

How much storage space do I need?+

As a rough guide, allow 10 m³ for a studio or a few rooms, 16 m³ for a small apartment and 33 m³ for the complete contents of a family home. If you have tall cabinets, garden furniture or lots of bulky items, go one size up, because a second run costs extra. If in doubt, we estimate the volume for you during the survey.

What am I not allowed to store?+

No flammable or explosive substances such as petrol, gas cylinders or paint in large quantities, no batteries or aerosols, no live animals or plants, no perishable food and nothing illegal. Unsure about something? Mention it in your request and we will see whether it is possible.

Are my belongings insured during storage?+

For the storage period you can optionally take out storage insurance with us, or insure your belongings through your own home contents insurance. If our movers handle the transport, the moving cover of up to € 125,000 with no excess applies during that transport. Cover during storage and cover during transport are two different things.

Can I get to my belongings in the meantime?+

Yes, by appointment during office hours: give us at least one working day's notice and your container will be ready. Walking in and out daily as with self-storage is not possible. If you need to take something out weekly, say so in your request and we will suggest a more practical option.

What does renting storage space cost?+

The price depends on the size of the container, the storage period and whether we deliver and collect the container or you drive to the warehouse yourself. Because transport costs differ per region, the current rates are listed per branch. Request your price and you will receive a calculation for your situation within one working day.

What is the minimum rental period?+

One month. After that you extend by the month and cancel whenever you want, with no long contracts.

Do I need to arrange moving boxes and materials myself?+

You can, but you do not have to. We supply moving boxes and reusable crates, blankets and furniture covers. Uniform boxes stack better, so more fits into the same container than with loose bags and boxes in all sizes.
