At Oomen Movers we have been through many moves. Despite the fact that every
A few days before your move
The days leading up to your move are crucial. This is the time to make final preparations:
- Check moving boxes: Make sure all boxes are labeled and in an easily accessible place. This will prevent chaos while moving.
- Furniture disassembly: Does furniture need to be disassembled? Do so on time and keep all parts and fasteners safe, such as in a separate bag or box.
- Final check of your old home: Walk through your old home one more time to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Look especially in kitchen cabinets, attic spaces and garages.
The moving day
Moving day itself can feel chaotic, but with a good plan and some extra points of interest, you can make the day go smoothly:
- Start the day with a good breakfast: A move takes a lot of energy. Make sure you eat and drink well before you get started. It can be a long day, so a nutritious breakfast is a must.
- Be on location early: Start early so you have enough time to deal with unexpected delays. Plus, you can then go over everything without rushing.
- Check windows, doors and lights: Before leaving your old home, check that all windows and doors are properly closed and that all lights are off. Also remember to turn off any running appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.
- Get a clear overview of your belongings: Make a list of all the boxes and furniture that need to be moved. This helps check that everything has been properly transferred to the new location. If necessary, give this list to the movers so they too can keep an overview.
- Keep handy items on hand: Keep a separate bag or box of essential items with you, such as keys, important documents, chargers, snacks and cleaning supplies. This avoids having to search for things you need right away.
- Supervise during unloading: When unloading things in your new home, it’s helpful to have someone give directions. This ensures that boxes and furniture go directly into the right rooms and you don’t have to move everything again later.
- Inspect your new home: Take a moment to inspect your new home. Look for damage to walls, floors or other parts. Should you find anything, report it immediately to the landlord or real estate agent and take pictures as proof. This will prevent discussions afterwards.
- Stay calm and flexible: Things can always go wrong, such as a box being misplaced or a piece of furniture not fitting through the door. Stay calm and come up with creative solutions to deal with these problems.
- Schedule lunch and breaks: Take plenty of breaks to catch your breath. Set out a few bottles of water and easy snacks so everyone can quickly refuel some energy.
After the move
The move is over, but there are still a few things to remember:
- Cleaning up old home: Make sure your old home is clean and tidy. Also remember to turn over the keys to the landlord or new owner.
- Address changes: Make a list of agencies where you need to report your new address. Think about your bank, health insurance, work and subscriptions. Also check that everything is confirmed.
- Time for a party: A move is not complete without a housewarming party! Invite family and friends to celebrate your new place. Make it a blast and enjoy your new home. Read our blog to know what to consider for a fun housewarming party!
