Summary: Moving day requires specific preparation, separate from the general moving plan. By checking in the days leading up to the move to ensure that boxes are labeled, furniture is disassembled and ready to go, and the old home has been inspected, you can avoid unnecessary delays. On moving day itself, it’s important to keep track of your belongings, set aside essential items, and supervise the loading and unloading. Afterward, handing over the old home and notifying relevant parties of your change of address are among the final steps in the moving process.
A Moving Checklist for Moving Day Itself
At Oomen Verhuizers, we’ve handled many moves. Although every move is unique, there are still a number of important things you need to keep in mind on moving day. In addition to the official moving checklist, we’ve created a separate checklist specifically for moving day. This way, you’ll always know what to keep in mind on moving day.

A few days before your move
The days leading up to your move are crucial. This is the time to make your final preparations:
- Check the moving boxes: Make sure all the boxes are labeled and placed in an easily accessible spot. This will help you avoid chaos during the move.
- Disassembling Furniture: Does the furniture need to be disassembled? Do this in advance and store all parts and fasteners safely, for example, in a separate bag or box.
- Final check of your old home: Walk through your old home one last time to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Be sure to check kitchen cabinets, attics, and garages.
Moving Day
Moving day itself can feel chaotic, but with a good plan and a few extra things to keep in mind, you can make sure the day goes smoothly:
- Start the day with a good breakfast: Moving takes a lot of energy. Make sure you eat and drink well before you get started. It could be a long day, so a nutritious breakfast is a must.
- Arrive at the location early: Start early so you have enough time to account for unexpected delays. Plus, that way you can go over everything one more time without rushing.
- Check windows, doors, and lights: Before you leave your old home, make sure all windows and doors are securely closed and that all lights are turned off. Don’t forget to turn off any appliances that might still be running, such as washing machines and dishwashers.
- Keep a clear record of your belongings: Make a list of all the boxes and pieces of furniture that need to be moved. This will help you check that everything has arrived safely at the new location. You may want to give this list to the movers so they can keep track of everything as well.
- Keep handy items close at hand: Keep a separate bag or box with essential items, such as keys, important documents, chargers, snacks, and cleaning supplies. This prevents you from having to search for things you need right away.
- Supervise the unloading: When your belongings are being unloaded at your new home, it’s a good idea to have someone give directions. This ensures that boxes and furniture go straight to the right rooms, so you won’t have to move everything around again later.
- Inspect Your New Home: Take a moment to inspect your new home. Check for any damage to the walls, floors, or other parts of the property. If you find anything, report it immediately to the landlord or real estate agent and take photos as evidence. This will prevent disputes later on.
- Stay calm and flexible: Things can always go wrong, such as a box being placed in the wrong spot or a piece of furniture that won’t fit through the door. Stay calm and come up with creative solutions to tackle these problems.
- Planning Lunch and Breaks: Take enough breaks to catch your breath. Have a few bottles of water and some easy snacks on hand so everyone can quickly recharge.
After the move
The move is over, but there are still a few things you shouldn’t forget:
- Cleaning out your old home: Make sure your old home is clean and tidy. Don’t forget to return the keys to the landlord or the new owner.
- Reporting a change of address: Make a list of the organizations you need to notify of your new address. These include your bank, health insurance provider, employer, and any subscriptions you have. Also, make sure to check that everything has been confirmed.
- Time to party: A move isn’t complete without a housewarming! Invite family and friends to celebrate your new place. Throw a great party and enjoy your new home.
Moving with a Plan
Moving doesn’t have to be stressful if you’re well prepared. Use this checklist to make the transition as smooth as possible. We’re looking forward to the move, but most of all: enjoy your new home!
