Ready to get started in your new home
Hey, finally in your new home. Before you can really enjoy your new place without any worries, there are still a few things to be done. As a

Safety first: check locks and security
The first step after you move is making sure you feel safe in your new home. There are numerous ways to ensure that your home is properly secured. In most homes, it goes without saying that the locks are new and modern. If they are not, you may be able to get this renewed with your contractor.
Some homes may require the installation of cameras, additional locks or alarms. Make sure this is done as soon as possible after you move into your new home. Sometimes this is an important part of insurance for insurance companies, but it’s also nice for your own sanity when this is taken care of.
Arrange your utilities and check equipment
It may seem logical that your gas/water/light work properly, and it is. Yet there are connections that are not yet working properly. For example, sometimes the gas or water has been disconnected because, for example, the house has been temporarily vacant.
Like the gas/water/light, there are sometimes complications with the central heating boiler, water heater or furnace. So check these appliances carefully after you move into your new home as well. Should there be any problems with the central heating boiler, for example, you can raise it in time with an authority to come and fix it.
Give your home a thorough cleaning
A clean house is the foundation for a fresh start in your new home. Often a house is not spick and span after moving. With multiple people (often with shoes) on the floor, the house gets dirty and deserves a cleaning. Schedule this as one of the first things once you’ve moved in. Nothing like a clean house. Literally and figuratively a fresh start!
Check for damage or defects
Damage and defects are things that generally do not occur after a move. However, there is such a thing as “hidden defects.” These are defects or damages that have not been reported in advance to you, the buyer. By taking a good tour of your home on day 1, you can check to see if there are indeed unknown damages to defects in your new home. If you find this out, you can still report it and it may save you money.
Update change of address with important agencies
There are quite a few agencies that will receive automatic notification of your move. Yet there are also organizations you have to inform about your new address yourself. At Oomen Movers we have made a list of these organizations so that you can inform them of your change of address in time. ATTENTION: do this on time!
Thus, when moving house, it is very important to inform various agencies. In our opinion, the following 9 agencies are the most important to inform about your move:
- Municipality
- Tax Office
- Health Insurer
- Pension Fund
- Banks and financial institutions
- Insurance companies
- Energy supplier
- Telecom provider
- Postal Companies
Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
It is now mandatory to have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in various rooms. Floors with a living room, bedroom or kitchen are required to have smoke detectors. Make sure you comply with this, especially for your own safety!
Set up your internet and television connection
Make sure your Internet connection and television connections are set up right away. With some providers, installation can take several days, so plan ahead.
