The Netherlands has had a truck toll in place since July 1, 2026. From now on, every truck weighing more than 3,500 kilograms pays a fee per kilometer driven on virtually all highways and on a number of provincial and municipal roads. This is a significant change for the transportation and moving industry, and most companies are passing the additional costs on to their customers. At Oomen, we are not doing that for the time being\u2014at least not for residential moves. In this article, we explain how the toll works and why you\u2019ll hardly notice it with us. <\/p>\n\n
The truck toll replaces the old Eurovignette and is a form of pay-as-you-go: it is not truck ownership that is taxed, but the actual use of the road. A toll box in the cab records the kilometers traveled, after which the toll is automatically charged. The heavier and more polluting the vehicle, the higher the rate per kilometer. <\/p>\n\n
That rate therefore depends on two factors: the truck\u2019s weight and its CO2 emission class. On average, it will amount to about 19 cents per kilometer in 2026. For example, a 16-metric-ton diesel truck (Euro 6) pays 16 cents per kilometer, while the exact same vehicle in a fully electric version costs 3.5 cents per kilometer. That difference is enormous, and that\u2019s exactly where our advantage lies. <\/p>\n\n
At the same time as this new measure is being introduced, some other charges are being reduced. The Eurovignette was eliminated as of July 1, and the motor vehicle tax for trucks has been significantly reduced. For vehicles up to 12 metric tons, it has been abolished entirely, and for heavier trucks, a zero rate will even apply temporarily until the end of 2026. So while fixed costs are falling, those who drive many kilometers in heavy, polluting vehicles will end up paying more on balance. The government is deliberately steering toward cleaner and more fuel-efficient transportation, and is channeling a large portion of the revenue back to the sector through subsidies to accelerate the transition to sustainability. <\/p>\n\n
In recent years, we have invested heavily in electric moving trucks. The vast majority of our fleet is now electric. As a result, our vehicles fall into the lowest rate category for the per-kilometer tax, and the costs per trip are negligible. While companies with diesel fleets are facing a noticeable increase in costs, the tax costs us virtually nothing. <\/p>\n\n
That decision is paying off for our customers. Since the tax costs us very little, we don\u2019t have to pass it on to you. So you benefit directly from the fact that we started the transition to electric vehicles early on, even before the tax was introduced. <\/p>\n\n
We operate according to a simple principle: electric-first. Whenever we plan a route, we prioritize our electric vehicles. As of this writing, we have 26 of them. We only use a diesel vehicle for trips longer than 300 kilometers, or when all electric vehicles are already in use. Each of these is a Euro 6 model\u2014the cleanest diesel class, which still scores relatively well among fuel-powered vehicles. <\/p>\n\n
We charge our vehicles using our own energy as much as possible. Our locations have a total of 20 charging stations, powered by our own solar panels and energy storage systems. This allows our electric moving trucks to operate cleanly and largely on electricity we generate ourselves. <\/p>\n\n
The truck toll makes polluting transportation more expensive and clean transportation more attractive. That is exactly the direction we have been moving in over the past few years. The result is a move that is more sustainable and for which you won\u2019t pay a single extra cent because of the new toll. <\/p>\n\n
